Evelyn Lauder has died...

Written By Sidiq Martanto on Rabu, 16 November 2011 | 21.26

Estée Lauder's ingenious executive and the philanthropist forever associated with breast cancer awareness passed away

Evelyn Lauder the co-creator and mastermind behind the symbol recognized worldwide for breast cancer awareness died on November 12, 2011...Ms. Lauder was a savvy well-organized businesswoman who served in various roles at Estée Lauder...She was born Evelyn Hausner, met her husband Leonard on a blind date in 1958 and they were married in 1959...After marrying Leonard
, she quit her job as a teacher and
went to work for her mother-in-law Estée Lauder, whose company of the same name was founded in 1946...

When Evelyn Lauder joined Estée Lauder, they were only marketing six products... Ms. Lauder was the creator of the Clinique brand at Estée Lauderand she developed its product line and training system...She was the first person ever to wear the white lab coat that is still worn by Clinique salespeople at cosmetic counters in department stores worldwide...

The Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center opened in 1992 after Ms. Lauder raised most of the $13.6 million dollars that was used to fund it...An additional $5 million was raised to fund clinical research there...At lunch with her friend Alexandra Penney, the editor of Self magazine, they brainstormed ideas about how to increase breast cancer awareness and hence the first annual issue of Self magazine for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was born...With breast cancer awareness as their cause, together Ms. Lauder and Ms. Penney established The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and chose the pink ribbon as its official symbol...Although Ms. Penney wanted the pink ribbons in all of Estee Lauder's New York City stores, Ms. Lauder went one step further and committed to have the pink symbol on all Estée Lauder counters countrywide...Ms. Lauder's committment to supporting breast cancer awareness and research was also evident in her creation of lipstick and blush in the shade of "Pink Ribbon" whose proceeds, $190,000, from sales went to the foundation adding up to $900,000 by the beginning of 1995...All in all in 2008, Estée Lauder Companies estimates that over $335 million was raised for breast cancer research and 80 million pink ribbons were given out...

It's just crazy how one truly committed person could touch the lives of so many women worldwide...Watch the video below to see for yourself the incredible amount of care and concern that Ms. Lauder exudes from her very essence...

In 2010, Moira Forbes interviewed Ms. Lauder and quotes her as having said,

"The most helpful piece of advice that I could give to anybody is to select a charity, or create a charity, that you really feel passionate about and if you do, don’t give up.

It’s the same as a career. Just stay with it and don’t let anything discourage you; just keep going and working for it. Before you know it’ll be a success.

I started the pink ribbon with Alexandra Penney…and for the first three of four years no one understood entirely what this was.

But I said…’If we just keep giving those ribbons away, it’s going to take off. It’s going to pick up.’ And one day I wore my pink ribbon and I got aboard a plane and the stewardess said “Oh, I know what that is! That’s…pink ribbon is the alert for doing your breast examination and having a mammography.”

The lovely Evelyn H. Lauder died in her home in New York City from complications associated with ovarian cancer...

Cool Math Games Can Help Bring Out the Scientist in You...

Written By Sidiq Martanto on Sabtu, 29 Oktober 2011 | 02.00

Math is one of my favorite subjects...Cool Math looks like a nice website for kids to use for playing and learning...Cool Math Games is a spin-off site from the Coolmath.com website because its creators established that it would be better if the math games had their own site... Coolmath-games.com doesn't just have math games...It also has science, geography, reading and spelling games...Although Coolmath-games.com is the number one educational website in the U.S. , I really like khanacademy.org for it's "how to" video tutorials, math drills and progress tracking all for FREE...And for multiplication or times tables we usually use multiplication.com ...

Playing a few math games online is not necessarily going to single-handedly save the planet or put a man on the moon, but I believe it could foster a love of learning which all kids need throughout their lives...A scientist's ability to hypothesize, theorize and then experiment to prove theories are mostly grounded in math...Just recently a group of scientists may have debunked Einstein's 1905 Theory of Special Relativity which states that nothing in the universe can travel faster than the speed of light... Well, they have recorded sub-atomic particles travelling faster than light...That's just crazy fast... Although not everyone has the innate ability to be a rocket scientist, math is an integral part of our daily lives and it is important to know whether you are going to the market or the moon...

Curriculum for parents to their kids

Written By Sidiq Martanto on Minggu, 10 Juli 2011 | 23.09

The curriculum that a teacher decides to follow depends on the students, their personalities and interests, the teacher, the teaching style of the teacher, the price of the curriculum and the needs of the students and the teacher, to name a few important factors. Parents can choose the right curriculum for their children after considering the learners’ personalities, interests and needs. There are lots of curriculums and support material available for parents to choose.

Parents may find it necessary to use support material when a curriculum does not fully meet the needs of a child, whether the child is going to a traditional school or being homeschooled. A parent may feel that while the curriculum has done a good job of introducing many topics to the child, he or she needs extra help for one particular lesson. In such cases, parents can use support material like lesson plans, or even individual worksheets, activities etc. Choosing the right curriculum for students is one of the first things that a homeschooling parent must do. Here are some of the curriculums.

Grade Based Curriculums
JumpStart has a large collection of fun grade based curriculums. Parents and teachers can use these curriculums to get their students to practice math, reading, science, and critical thinking. Grade based curriculums are convenient, since they allow parents to access the entire curriculum for a single child under a single topic.

Science Curriculums
Science curriculums differ from each other in many ways. These differences mainly arise from the amount and kind of hands-on learning each curriculum requires. Parents should do all they can to find out about the different kinds of science curriculums available and what each one has to offer before choosing the best one for their kids.

Reading Curriculums
Reading curriculums differ from each other in terms of their approach to teaching kids how to read. Some focus on mastering phonics, while others focus on ‘sight reading,’ which involves memorizing whole words. Parents can choose from a wide variety of homeschooling reading curriculums. Choosing the right reading curriculum is important to ensure kids have a great time learning to read.

Math Curriculums
When teaching their kids math, parents do not have to rely solely on the math curriculum they or the school has chosen. There are lots of educational resources that can be used to supplement a curriculum. Whether one is looking for worksheets/workbooks for extra practice, math games for added fun, math videos for better explanations, or math websites for more information about a concept, Math resources are easily available on the internet. Parents can make use of these resources to give children the extra help they need to master mathematics!

English Curriculums
Parents should always compare English curriculums from multiple sources before settling on the best one for their kids. Parents often find that they have to pick and choose curriculums from different companies before they have a satisfactory overall course. This is because English is such a broad subject, comprised of components like writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
